Design Feature: Unique Indie, San Francisco

Founder Janet Hu of
April Reno Collection on

I recently had sat down with Janet Hu, the founder of Unique Indie at a cafe on Fillmore Street in San Francisco to discuss her new e-commerce venture which focuses on emerging accessory designers. Over lattes, the extremely likable and business minded fashion mogul in waiting told me all about her new company and her love of the San Francisco design scene.

Unique Indie was started just over eight months ago, when the founder was eager to begin her own company focusing on accessory designers who were still a bit underground. After working at Google and Salesforce, she joined the tech accelerator Founder Institute to work on a fashion company, but was not happy with the direction that it was taking, so she decided to make a new start. After researching the fashion e-commerce industry, Unique Indie was born. "I started from scratch and investigated all of the fashion company models that were being created. One problem that did come up over and over again, was that there are really talented emerging designers that are having a lot of difficulty getting their name out there. I wanted to build something that would solve a problem and promote these extremely talented designers," Janet explained.

After attending many art and craft shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Janet "stalked" the designers that she was interested in and convinced them to sign up with the website. There are currently 11 designers on the who all work and live in San Francisco. The jewelry lines include Stephanie Hoffmann Designs, Iacua Designs, April Reno Jewelry, Kelly Nedderman, Raissa Bump Jewelry, Kendra Renee Jewelry and Lauren Engel Jewelry. Handbag and accessory designers Holly Scott, Paulina Carcach and TILT Adornments are also available for purchase.

"We have really talented designers who have been doing it for over ten years and we also have newer designers who are just starting out. I have started off with designers in San Francisco but will slowly expand to other cities." said Janet. "Our designers are from a wide range of backgrounds and all have unique styles. Iacua Designs for example has a fantastic Natural Collection which is on the website now. We have really gotten great feedback from our customers about the products. Holly Scott, one of our handbag lines from designer Lisa Davey who lives in the Marina area, has such great quality and detail oriented products. We recently sold out of some of her handbags. The girls in San Francisco also really love Paulina Carcach's handbags which are truly special and fashion forward, " she continued.

Two trunk shows are planned for this summer while the founder contemplates her expansion very carefully. With Janet Hu's enthusiasm, the great quality products on offer and a roster of extremely talented designers, I have no doubt that Unique Indie will prosper. Shop the collections at!
